Kimpton, Thruxton and Fyfield Church of England Primary School

Year 6

In Year 6, our curriculum represents the pinnacle of the primary journey, designed to challenge pupils with complex themes and prepare them for the transition to secondary school. Students engage in deep historical inquiries, scientific investigations into the origins of life, and advanced mathematical concepts.

Humanities: Crime, Punishment, and Ancient Civilizations

The Year 6 Humanities curriculum balances local heritage with global history. Students investigate the evolution of Crime and Punishment in Britain, analyzing how laws and consequences have shifted through the ages. This is contrasted by a study of North and South America, focusing on the Ancient Maya civilization of Central America. Pupils explore the sophisticated achievements of the Maya—from their complex writing systems and mathematical concepts (including the use of zero) to their grand ceremonial pyramids and urban planning.

Science: Evolution, Inheritance, and the Physical World

Scientific study in Year 6 moves into the fascinating realm of biological history and physical phenomena.

  • Evolution and Inheritance: Students learn how living things have changed over millions of years. They investigate how fossils provide a record of past life and explore the mechanics of inheritance—understanding how characteristics are passed from parents to offspring and how variation can lead to natural selection.

  • The Physical World: Our physical science units cover Electricity, where pupils build and represent complex circuits, and Light, exploring how it travels and how we see things. We also continue our biological studies with a focus on the Human Body, specifically the circulatory system and the impact of lifestyle on health.

Mastery in English and Mathematics

Core subjects focus on sophisticated analysis and high-level fluency to ensure students are "secondary-ready."

  • English: We use powerful literature to drive our writing, including the Victorian mystery Wild Boy by Rob Lloyd Jones and the historical drama of Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. Students explore themes of resilience and social change through the true story of Hidden Figures, learning about the Black women mathematicians who were vital to the Space Race. Writing tasks range from travel writing and persuasive arguments to technical reports and creative sequels.

  • Mathematics: The curriculum covers the full breadth of the primary math framework, including mastery of the four operations, ratio and proportion, algebra, and complex geometry. There is a significant focus on fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as calculating area, perimeter, volume, and analyzing statistics.

A Glimpse at the Year 6 Subject Map

Subject Key Topics Covered
History & Geography Crime & Punishment, North and South America, and the Ancient Maya.
Science Evolution & Inheritance, Electricity, Light, and the Circulatory System.
RE Islam (Revelation and Ramadan), the Messiah (Incarnation), and Humanism.
Computing Big Data, Bletchley Park (Cryptography), and Python programming.
PE & Games Gymnastics, OAA (problem-solving), Tag Rugby, and Athletics.
The Arts Drawing (Tudor architecture), Mayan-inspired sculpture, and Pop Art.

By the end of Year 6, our pupils are not only academically proficient but are also reflective and independent learners, ready to take their next steps with confidence and a strong sense of their own "Habits of Character".
