Year 5

In Year 5, our curriculum challenges pupils to think like explorers, historians, and scientists as they delve into the "Extreme Earth" and the legends of the past. This year is designed to foster independent thinking and complex problem-solving, preparing children for the responsibilities of Upper Key Stage 2.

Humanities: From Viking Longships to Extreme Earth

Our History curriculum takes a deep dive into the early medieval period, exploring the lives of Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Pupils investigate legendary figures like Beowulf and Leif Erikson, examining the impact of these settlements on British history. In Geography, we turn our attention to the power of nature in our "Extreme Earth" unit. Students learn about the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, and engage in critical discussions about human responsibility for natural disasters.

Science and Technical Innovation

Science in Year 5 explores the physical and biological world through rigorous experimentation. We investigate Forces, exploring gravity, air resistance, and friction, and look at the properties and changes of Materials. Our biological studies focus on Living Things and Their Habitats, including the life cycles of various animals and the process of reproduction in plants.

Mastery in English and Mathematics

Our English curriculum uses rich, diverse texts—from the epic poetry of Beowulf to the visual storytelling of Flood—to inspire sophisticated writing. Pupils learn to write to discuss, creating balanced arguments about environmental issues, and to inform, through detailed museum-style descriptions of historical artifacts.

In Mathematics, we focus on securing fluency with larger numbers and more complex operations. Key areas include:

  • Working with numbers up to 1,000,000.

  • Mastering long multiplication and short division.

  • Deepening understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • Exploring area, perimeter, and volume as well as the properties of angles.

Technology and the Arts

Year 5 pupils utilise cutting-edge technology and creative techniques:

  • Computing: Students explore data collection through the Mars Rover project, learn to use Micro:bits, and create their own Stop-Motion Animations.

  • Design & Technology: We explore Electrical Systems and analyze nutrition to answer the question, "What could be healthier?"

  • The Arts: In Art, we study the famous "Great Wave" by Hokusai and create Textile works and Greek-inspired sculptures.
