Year 3

In Year 3, our curriculum invites children to become adventurous historians and scientists as they travel from the dawn of Britain to the golden age of the Pharaohs. This year marks an exciting step into Key Stage 2, where we focus on deepening critical thinking and exploring the connections between different eras and environments.

Humanities: From the Stone Age to Ancient Egypt

Our journey through time begins with the Stone Age to Iron Age, where students discover how Britain’s earliest inhabitants lived, hunted, and eventually built lasting monuments like Stonehenge. In the summer, we shift our focus to Ancient Egypt, investigating the secrets of the pyramids, the significance of the Nile, and the legacy of figures like Tutankhamun. Our Geography unit on Fairtrade complements these studies by looking at global connections, teaching children how our choices as consumers affect farmers and workers around the world.

Science and Discovery

Science in Year 3 is hands-on and investigative. Children explore the world of Rocks and Fossils, learning how they are formed and what they tell us about the Earth's history. We also shine a light on the physics of Light and Shadows, investigate the invisible pull of Forces and Magnets, and study the biology of Plants and the human body.

Core Skills: Literacy and Numeracy

In English, we use high-quality texts like Stone Age Boy and Charlotte’s Web to inspire a range of writing. Students learn to write to inform through biographies and non-chronological reports, to persuade through travel brochures and letters, and to entertain through poetry and creative storytelling.

Our Mathematics curriculum focuses on building confidence with larger numbers and more complex operations. Key areas include:

  • Mastering numbers up to 1000.

  • Securing mental strategies and moving into column addition and subtraction.

  • Learning the 2, 4, and 8 times tables.

  • An introduction to fractions and the properties of parallel and perpendicular lines.

Creative and Technical Arts

Creativity is woven throughout the year, often linking directly to our history topics. In Art, students explore Pop Art and create their own Canopic Jars in the style of the Egyptians. In Design and Technology, they tackle projects ranging from sewing and seasonal food preparation to the engineering of pneumatics.
